Perspective: Changing Times—Should the Hydrocarbon Industry Still Decarbonize?

Carlos Garibaldi | Founder and Non-Executive Board Member, Plata Energy

In his JPT guest column, Carlos Garibaldi argues that despite geopolitical shifts and a renewed focus on energy security, the hydrocarbon industry must persist in its decarbonization efforts. He emphasizes that climate change remains an unrelenting challenge, unaffected by political or economic fluctuations. Garibaldi advocates for a pragmatic approach, urging the industry to continue investing in decarbonization, diversification, and digital transformation—the “Three D’s”—to ensure long-term sustainability and maintain its social license to operate. He highlights that while hydrocarbons remain vital for energy security, proactive measures are essential to address environmental concerns and adapt to evolving global expectations.
